So Many Books... - May 5th, 2009

09:25 pm - Five on the Fifth of Five

No, that's not the fifth Percy Jackson book I'm talking about, though it was due out today both sides of the Atlantic, but the fact that I made my first LJ entry five years ago today. It's not worth linking to, as it was just a bit of babbling about needing to figure out the all the details of LiveJournal, and a clumsy reference to Lady Schrapnell's catchphrase "God is in the details", but it was nicely timed for this anniversary nonetheless.

Becca (writer of elegant, poetic prose and praised by Kelly Link herself) provided me with a perfectly splendid sentence today: 'To go more in deepth would be spoilering'. It would indeed! So having just finished an apparently little-read conclusion to a YA fantasy trilogy, I thought I'd toss some ideas out about the ending without identifying the book. The ending was quite unusual in that the protagonist (aged 18) willingly gives up her magic. I was argu - er, discussing it last night with [info]steepholm, who said it definitely sounded like a downer, and I've been trying to tease out why I think it wasn't, by tossing around some of the things magic commonly signifies in YA.
More deepth without spoilering )

Back to the anniversary thing - although my belief was that I was only setting up an LJ account so I could more easily comment on other people's blogs, I can't imagine now having lived the last 5 years without the people and books it's brought. A fervent thank you to all involved.
